Melocactus matanzanus 'The Dwarf Turks' – The Compact Cuban Cephalium Cactus
Melocactus matanzanus 'The Dwarf Turks' is a charming and compact species native to Cuba. This cactus is renowned for its rounded, deep green body and its signature cephalium—a woolly, red to orange structure that forms at maturity, producing small pink flowers. Unlike many cacti, once the cephalium develops, the body ceases to grow, making it a unique and visually striking addition to any collection.
Distinctive Features
- Compact, Globular Shape: A small, rounded cactus with a deep green body adorned with evenly spaced ribs.
- Prominent Cephalium: A distinctive woolly, orange-red cap that forms as the plant matures and continues to grow, producing flowers and fruit.
- Seasonal Blooms: Produces delicate pink flowers emerging from the cephalium, often followed by small, bright red fruits.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to full sun; too much direct sunlight may cause scorching.
- Water: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to fully dry out between waterings, especially in cooler months.
- Humidity: Prefers low to moderate humidity; avoid excessive moisture to prevent rot.
- Media: Well-draining cactus mix with added sand or perlite to improve drainage.
- Temperature: Thrives in warm conditions between 18–30°C, but should not be exposed to temperatures below 10°C.
- Fertiliser: Apply a diluted cactus fertiliser during the growing season (spring to summer) every 4–6 weeks.
- Repotting: Avoid frequent repotting, as the plant prefers being slightly root-bound; repot only when necessary.
Additional Notes
- Once the cephalium forms, the main body of the plant stops growing, and energy is redirected to flower and fruit production.
- Not frost-hardy and should be kept indoors or in a greenhouse in cooler climates.
- Highly sensitive to overwatering—ensure proper drainage to prevent root rot.
- Non-toxic to pets but should be handled carefully due to its spines.
Melocactus matanzanus 'The Dwarf Turks' is a fascinating and visually distinctive cactus that adds character to any collection. With its woolly cephalium and compact growth, this species stands out among other cacti, offering a unique display of flowers and fruits once mature. Ideal for experienced collectors, it requires careful watering and warm conditions but rewards patience with its striking appearance.
