Monadenium stapelioides f. cristata, now accepted as a crested form of Euphorbia neostapelioides, is a rare fasciated variant of this East African succulent species. Native to Tanzania and parts of Kenya, the standard form grows in rocky grasslands with seasonal rainfall. The crested form develops fan-shaped, contorted growth along a linear ridge, forming sculptural, undulating crests rather than typical upright stems. Like its normal form, it arises from a tuberous base and produces small reddish to maroon cyathia when in active growth.
Care Tips:
- Light: Prefers bright filtered light to partial sun; protect the crest from scorching
- Water: Water moderately in the active season, allowing the soil to dry between waterings
- Humidity: Performs best in low humidity environments
- Media: Use a sharply draining succulent mix with added mineral grit
- Temperature: Optimal range is 18–30 °C; protect from cold and frost
- Fertiliser: Apply a weak, balanced fertiliser during active growth
- Repotting: Repot during active growth if the plant becomes rootbound or top-heavy
Additional Notes:
- Known to be toxic
