check_circle In Stock
Monstera friedrichsthalii, also known as the Swiss Cheese Vine, is a delicate trailing species of aroid native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. Often confused with its upright cousin Monstera adansonii, this species is distinguished by its cascading growth pattern and more refined, elongated foliage. It naturally dangles from trees or clambers loosely through vegetation, thriving in filtered jungle light.
Distinctive Features
- Trailing Habit: Naturally pendulous with long internodes, perfect for hanging baskets or high shelves.
- Narrow Fenestrated Leaves: Leaves are thinner and more elongated, with distinctive oval perforations.
- Slender Vining Stems: Develops wiry stems that produce aerial roots but rarely cling upright without support.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best; it will tolerate some shade but growth may slow.
- Water: Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil is dry; avoid waterlogging the roots.
- Humidity: Enjoys moderate to high humidity; aim for 60% or higher where possible.
- Media: Prefers an airy, free-draining mix with perlite, orchid bark, and a touch of coco coir.
- Temperature: Ideal range is 18–26°C; avoid exposure to cold drafts or frost.
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer.
- Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years or when roots circle the base of the pot.
Additional Notes
- Beautiful in hanging pots or as a cascading element in mixed displays—allow space to trail freely.
- Toxic to pets due to calcium oxalates—keep away from curious cats and dogs.
Monstera friedrichsthalii lends a graceful, airy aesthetic to any plant collection with its flowing vines and fenestrated foliage. Unlike its upright relatives, its draping form adds vertical interest in a uniquely soft and naturalistic way.
