Monstera obliqua is a tropical epiphyte originating from the rainforests of Central and South America, particularly Peru. Famed for its almost lace-like foliage, this species is among the most sought-after in the Monstera genus. Known for its extreme leaf fenestration and slow growth, it has earned a reputation for being as rare as it is exquisite.
Distinctive Features
- Exquisite Fenestrations: Leaves can be over 90% holes, creating a striking, skeletal appearance unmatched by other Monstera species.
- Petite Growth Habit: Unlike its larger relatives, Monstera obliqua remains compact, with thinner stems and smaller overall stature.
- Delicate Texture: Its paper-thin foliage is fragile and requires careful handling, adding to its mystique and rarity.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal—direct sun can scorch its delicate leaves.
- Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged; never let it dry out completely.
- Humidity: Prefers very high humidity—over 80% is ideal for healthy foliage development.
- Media: Use a well-aerated, chunky aroid mix with orchid bark, perlite, and sphagnum moss.
- Temperature: Thrives between 18–27°C; sensitive to temperature drops.
- Fertiliser: Feed lightly with a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly during active growth.
- Repotting: Rarely needed due to its slow growth, but refresh media annually to prevent compaction.
Additional Notes
- It is considered toxic to pets if ingested due to calcium oxalates, which may cause oral irritation.
