Myrmecodia platytyrea - Ant Plant

Myrmecodia platytyrea is a distinctive lowland myrmecophyte found in coastal Queensland and nearby regions of New Guinea. It is best known for its compact, disc-like caudex which supports specialised chambers for symbiotic ant colonies. Compared to the more upright and treelet-forming Myrmecodia tuberosa, this species maintains a flatter profile and a tidier silhouette, making it a popular choice for container and mounted displays.

Care Tips

• Light: Prefers bright, filtered light or morning sun; protect from harsh direct rays.
• Water: Allow surface of the media to dry before watering; excellent drainage is essential.
• Humidity: Performs best in moderate to high humidity but copes well with average indoor levels.
• Media: Use an open epiphytic mix with bark, charcoal, and perlite; avoid moisture-retaining soils.
• Temperature: Keep between 18–28°C; not frost-hardy.
• Fertiliser: Feed monthly with a half-strength orchid or epiphyte fertiliser during active growth.
• Repotting: Rarely needed; best grown mounted or in a shallow, airy container.
