Nepenthes 'St Gaya'
check_circle In Stock
Nepenthes 'St Gaya' is a cultivated hybrid bringing together the genetics of highland species such as Nepenthes khasiana and Nepenthes ventricosa. The pitchers are stout and well-formed, often green speckled with deep red, though under higher light they can shift to rich crimson tones. A broad, flared peristome frames the opening, while the lid arches over to protect against excess rain.
Pitchers are produced consistently throughout the year, even in environments where humidity fluctuates. This steady production, along with their waxy interior walls and nectar-laced rim, ensures a regular supply of captured prey. The plant uses its enzyme-rich fluid to digest insects, drawing nutrients from them in a way that compensates for the poor soils where its parent species evolved. Subtle shifts in temperature or light can influence not just colour, but the balance between lower, ground-hugging pitchers and the more slender, aerial ones that appear as the vine matures.
As growth progresses, the plant can take on a climbing habit, using surrounding supports or its own coiled tendrils to gain height. The transition from lower to upper pitchers creates a natural display of variation, with each form adapted to a different range of insect prey.
Care Tips:
- Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal; gentle morning or late afternoon sun helps enhance colour.
- Water: Keep evenly moist using rainwater or low-mineral water; avoid complete drying.
- Humidity: Benefits from higher humidity, ideally above 50%, but copes with moderate levels.
- Media: Use a free-draining, airy mix such as sphagnum moss with bark or perlite.
- Fertiliser: Apply very dilute orchid fertiliser occasionally to roots or a small amount into active pitchers.
- Temperature: Prefers intermediate conditions between 18–28 °C.
- Repotting: Refresh media every 1–2 years to maintain aeration and healthy growth.
