Golden Winter Spreads of Oxalis flava
Oxalis flava, commonly known as the Yellow Oxalis, is a resilient South African species valued for its cheerful yellow blooms and prostrate growth. This species thrives in cooler climates and is particularly suited to garden beds or pots where it can expand to around 15 cm in width. It flowers prolifically from winter through early spring before retreating underground to form resting bulbils during summer.
Distinctive Features
- Spreading habit: Forms a low, mat-like spread up to 15 cm across, ideal for ground cover in seasonal beds.
- Bright yellow flowers: Produces a flush of 4 cm golden blooms during the cooler months.
- Seasonal dormancy: Enters a resting phase during summer, storing energy in underground bulbils.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade outdoors; indoor flowering is rare.
- Water: Water regularly during active growth; reduce watering during summer dormancy.
- Humidity: Tolerates dry to average humidity well; excessive moisture during dormancy should be avoided.
- Media: Plant in well-drained, sandy or gritty soil to avoid bulb rot.
- Temperature: Best suited to temperate zones with cool winters and mild summers.
- Fertiliser: Apply a general fertiliser monthly during the growing period.
- Repotting: Repot in early autumn before the onset of active growth.
Additional Notes
- Ideal for seasonal displays in outdoor containers or rockeries.
- Will not flower well indoors due to insufficient seasonal cues.
