Oxalis purpurea is a cool climate, winter-growing species native to South Africa. Known for its delightful masses of pink blooms appearing in winter to early spring, it forms a dense, prostrate mat of clover-like foliage. This hardy bulbous plant is beloved for its low-growing, spreading nature and its adaptability to garden beds and containers.
Distinctive Features
- Prolific flowering: Bears vibrant pink flowers approximately 5 cm wide across the cooler months.
- Growth habit: Forms a prostrate carpet-like mat with lush trifoliate leaves.
- Seasonal dormancy: Enters summer dormancy with underground bulb formation.
Care Tips
- Light: Full sun to partial shade; will not flower indoors without adequate light.
- Water: Water regularly during active growth; allow to dry in dormancy.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate to low humidity; well-suited to outdoor climates.
- Media: Well-drained sandy or loamy soil with good organic content.
- Temperature: Thrives in cool to mild climates; tolerates light frost.
- Fertiliser: Monthly application of balanced fertiliser during active growth.
- Repotting: Best done in early autumn just before growth resumes.

- Dispatch Day: All orders are dispatched on Tuesdays.
- Cut-off for Same Week Dispatch: Orders must be placed by Monday 7am (AEST) to be sent that week. Orders placed after this will be dispatched the following Tuesday.
WA, NT & TAS Orders
- Cut-off: Orders to WA, NT and TAS must be placed by Friday 7am (AEST) to be included in the following week’s dispatch.
- Treatment & Delay: These orders require biosecurity treatment and certification, which is completed each Friday. Please allow an additional 1–2 weeks for processing.
Plant Health Certification (PHAC) Fees
- $20 fee applies to WA orders.
- $10 fee applies to NT and TAS orders.
- This fee is per order (not per plant) and is included in your shipping cost at checkout.
