Pachycereus marginatus, commonly known as the Mexican Fencepost, is native to the arid regions of Mexico. This impressive cactus is characterised by its tall, structured columns and distinctive vertical ribs, making it a popular choice for landscaping and decorative gardening.
Distinctive Features
- Stems: Grows as upright columns, typically between 4 to 6 metres tall, marked by striking vertical ribs.
- Spines: Short, sturdy, and consistently spaced along the rib edges, adding aesthetic symmetry.
- Flowers: White to pale pink blooms appearing near the tips of mature stems, often nocturnal and attracting pollinators such as bats and moths.
Care Notes
- Light: Requires full sunlight, ideally 6 or more hours daily.
- Water: Minimal; allow soil to fully dry out before watering again.
- Humidity: Prefers low humidity typical of desert climates.
- Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 15°C to 30°C but can tolerate brief mild frosts.
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced cactus fertiliser at half strength once monthly during active growth periods.
- Repotting: Required every 2-3 years or when visibly root-bound.
