Pachypodium lamerei, commonly called Madagascar Palm, is an attractive succulent native to southern Madagascar. Despite its common name, it is not a true palm but is prized for its palm-like appearance, featuring a tall, spiny trunk topped with lush foliage.
Distinctive Features
- Trunk: Tall, robust, spiny trunk that broadens at the base, providing a striking silhouette.
- Leaves: Glossy, elongated green leaves forming a lush crown atop the trunk; deciduous during dormancy periods.
- Flowers: Produces fragrant, white, funnel-shaped flowers during warm seasons, often in mature specimens.
Care Tips
- Light: Thrives in full sun to bright indirect sunlight; strong sunlight promotes healthier growth.
- Water: Water moderately, allowing the soil to dry thoroughly between waterings; significantly reduce watering in winter.
- Humidity: Prefers low humidity conditions, typical of indoor or arid climates.
- Temperature: Optimal temperature range is between 18°C and 30°C; protect from frost and temperatures below 10°C.
- Fertiliser: Feed monthly during the active growing season with a balanced, diluted succulent fertiliser.
- Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years, or as needed, using a well-draining succulent or cactus soil mix.
