Pachypodium horombense - Compact Madagascar Succulent
Pachypodium horombense is a striking succulent native to the Horombe Plateau in Madagascar. This slow-growing species is distinguished by its swollen, spiny stem and bright yellow, trumpet-shaped flowers. It thrives in arid conditions and has evolved to store water in its thick caudex, making it an excellent choice for xerophytic gardens.
Distinctive Features
- Swollen Stem: The plant develops a thick, water-storing caudex with a rough, spiny surface.
- Bright Yellow Flowers: Its stunning, golden-yellow blooms contrast beautifully with its grey-green foliage.
- Compact Growth: Unlike other Pachypodium species, this one remains relatively small and globular in form.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade for optimal growth.
- Water: Water sparingly; allow soil to dry completely between waterings.
- Humidity: Adapts well to dry conditions; avoid excessive humidity.
- Media: Well-draining, sandy or rocky soil is essential to prevent root rot.
- Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures (18-30°C); protect from frost.
- Fertiliser: Feed with a diluted cactus fertiliser during the growing season.
- Repotting: Repot only when necessary, as it dislikes root disturbance.
Additional Notes
- Pachypodium horombense is slow-growing but can live for decades with proper care.
- Like many Pachypodium species, it has spines that offer natural protection.
- Toxicity: Contains toxic sap that may cause skin irritation; keep away from pets and children.
Pachypodium horombense is a fascinating addition to any succulent collection, prized for its unusual shape and resilience. Its combination of a swollen caudex, spiny protection, and vibrant yellow blooms make it a true botanical treasure.
