Pachypodium saundersii – Kudu Lily

Pachypodium saundersii, commonly known as the Kudu Lily, is a distinctive Southern African caudiciform grown for its swollen trunk, pale textured bark and sharply spined branches.

Plants are supplied from our established stock and will vary naturally in caudex shape, branching, foliage and overall appearance. The photographs show examples of the size and quality currently available; the plant supplied will be selected from the bench.

Distinctive Features

• Plant type: Deciduous caudiciform shrub

Seasonal Growth

Pachypodium saundersii grows actively during the warmer months and may lose some or all of its leaves as conditions cool or the plant enters dormancy.

The amount of foliage present will vary depending on the season and the individual plant. Receiving a plant with reduced foliage or without leaves during dormancy is normal and does not necessarily indicate a health problem.

Natural Variation

Every plant develops differently. Caudex width, trunk shape, branching, spine length and the number of active growing points will vary between plants. Established plants may also have natural bark texture, old spine scars and minor cosmetic marks.

Care

• Light: Grow in very bright light to direct sun. Gradually acclimatise plants before moving them into stronger sunlight.
• Water: Water thoroughly during active warm-weather growth, then allow the growing media to dry before watering again.
• Dormancy: Reduce watering considerably when the plant loses its leaves or stops actively growing. Cool, dormant plants are particularly vulnerable to excessive moisture.
• Media: Use a coarse, free-draining cactus and succulent mix.
• Temperature: Prefers warm conditions. Protect from frost, prolonged cold and cold, wet weather.
• Fertiliser: Apply a diluted cactus fertiliser occasionally during active growth.
• Repotting: Repot during warm weather when necessary. Avoid watering immediately after disturbing or damaging the roots.

Handling

This plant has long, sharp spines. Wear suitable gloves when handling and keep it away from children and pets. Avoid contact with the sap, particularly around the eyes and broken skin.

Transport Note

Plants will be packed carefully; however, leaves may occasionally be marked or shed during transport. This does not affect the established caudex, and new foliage will develop during active growth.
