Parodia scopa var. minima
check_circle In Stock
Parodia scopa var. minima is a small, clustering cactus with neat, spherical stems covered in fine, white to golden spines. This variety is more compact than the typical form of Parodia scopa, with individual stems often remaining under 5 cm in diameter, forming tight groups over time. In summer, it produces bright yellow flowers with a reddish tint at the base, creating a strong contrast against the pale spination.
The species is native to southern Brazil, Uruguay, and parts of Argentina, where it grows in rocky grasslands and slopes. These habitats are characterised by well-drained soils, seasonal rainfall, and good sun exposure. Parodia scopa var. minima retains the same growth habits as the type but in a reduced size, making it highly suited for cultivation in pots and collections where space is limited. It develops only a small root system, so keeping the pot size modest is recommended.
Care Tips
- Light: Requires bright light with some direct sun. Avoid excessive midday exposure in hot climates.
- Water: Water thoroughly in the warmer months, allowing soil to dry between applications. Keep almost dry in winter dormancy.
- Media: Use a gritty, free-draining cactus mix with added sand or pumice.
- Fertiliser: Apply a balanced cactus fertiliser during the active growing season for improved flowering.
- Temperature: Protect from frost; best kept above 5 °C.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years in spring, refreshing the soil and allowing for cluster expansion.
