Pedilanthus tithymaloides Nana 'Dwarf Devil's Backbone'
release_alert Low Stock - 2 available
Pedilanthus tithymaloides Nana, commonly called 'Dwarf Devil's Backbone', is a compact form of the species native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Caribbean and Central America. In its natural range, the species grows in well-drained soils in warm, sunny locations, often forming low hedges or thickets.
This dwarf selection produces upright, zig-zagging stems with closely spaced, small, fleshy leaves. The foliage is bright green, sometimes developing reddish or pink tones on the edges when grown in higher light. Its reduced size makes it more manageable in containers compared to the larger-growing type.
Flowering can occur in warm months, producing small, slipper-shaped bracts in shades of red or pink that give the plant its common name. Like other members of the Euphorbia family, the stems exude a milky latex when cut.
Care Tips:
- Light: Full sun to bright, indirect light; more sun encourages stronger colouration.
- Water: Allow the top layer of soil to dry between waterings; reduce watering in cooler months.
- Humidity: Average household humidity is suitable.
- Media: Use a free-draining succulent or cactus mix.
- Fertiliser: Feed every 4–6 weeks in the growing season with a diluted balanced fertiliser.
- Temperature: Maintain between 18–29 °C; protect from frost.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when the plant becomes rootbound.
Additional Notes:
- Known to be toxic
