Pelargonium appendiculatum (Summer Dormant)
check_circle In Stock
Pelargonium appendiculatum is a truly captivating geophytic geranium species that will add a touch of intrigue to your plant collection. This fascinating plant is native to South Africa and is prized for its unique growth habit and attractive foliage.
Distinctive Features
- Caudex: Develops a large, underground caudex that stores water and nutrients, allowing it to survive in arid environments.
- Leaves: Produces attractive, deeply lobed leaves that emerge from the caudex during the growing season. The leaves are typically grey-green in colour and have a velvety texture.
- Flowers: Produces small, white or pale pink flowers on tall stalks. The flowers are not the main attraction of this species but add a delicate touch to the plant.
- Growth Habit: This Pelargonium has a geophytic growth habit, meaning it retreats underground during dormancy, leaving only its caudex visible. This adaptation allows it to survive harsh conditions and conserve energy.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
- Water: Water sparingly during the growing season (typically autumn and winter), allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During the dormancy period (typically spring and summer), reduce watering significantly or withhold water altogether.
- Soil: Use a well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix. You can also add perlite or pumice to improve drainage.
- Temperature: Tolerates a wide range of temperatures, from cool nights to hot days. However, it's best to protect it from frost.
- Fertiliser: Use a diluted succulent fertiliser once a month during the growing season (autumn and winter). Do not fertilise during the dormancy period.
Important Note about Dormancy:
Please be aware that Pelargonium appendiculatum can enter dormancy during certain times of the year, typically in the spring and summer months. During this period, it may lose its leaves and appear to be resting. This is a natural cycle for this species, and it does not mean the plant is unhealthy.
Care during dormancy: During dormancy, reduce watering significantly or withhold water altogether. Keep the plant in a cool, dry place and avoid fertilising. When the growing season resumes, typically in autumn or winter, you can gradually increase watering and resume fertilising.
