Peperomia caperata 'Schumi Red'
cancel Sold out
Peperomia caperata 'Schumi Red' is a compact plant grown for its deeply textured and darkly coloured foliage. The species is native to Brazil, where it occurs in shaded understory habitats with warm temperatures and high humidity.
The leaves are heart-shaped with pronounced corrugation and a glossy surface. Colouration ranges from deep burgundy to near-black, often with subtle metallic overtones that shift with the light. Stems are short, keeping the plant low and clump-forming, making it suitable for small containers or terrarium displays.
Flowering produces slender, upright spikes carrying numerous tiny flowers, though it is cultivated primarily for its ornamental foliage. It remains compact throughout its life, making it easy to manage in indoor settings.
Care Tips:
- Light: Bright, indirect light; tolerates lower light but colour may fade.
- Water: Keep the soil lightly moist, allowing the top layer to dry slightly between waterings.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity; avoid prolonged dry air.
- Media: Use a well-draining potting mix with added perlite or fine bark.
- Fertiliser: Feed every 4-6 weeks during active growth with a diluted balanced fertiliser.
- Temperature: Maintain between 18-27 °C; protect from temperatures below 15 °C.
- Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes rootbound.
