Philodendron gloriosum

Philodendron gloriosum is a terrestrial aroid native to Colombia, with its range extending into parts of Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil. It grows along the forest floor in tropical rainforests, spreading horizontally by creeping rhizomes that root into the soil and produce upright leaves at regular intervals.
Leaves are large, heart-shaped, and velvety in texture, with a deep green surface highlighted by prominent white to pale green veins. As the plant matures, the foliage can reach substantial sizes, with each leaf emerging from the rhizome on a long, sturdy petiole. The creeping habit means new growth moves gradually forward, leaving older leaves behind.
In its native environment, Philodendron gloriosum produces an inflorescence typical of the Araceae family, consisting of a spadix and surrounding spathe. In cultivation, it is primarily grown for its dramatic foliage, and providing ample horizontal space encourages healthy rhizome growth and larger leaves.
Care Tips:
- Light: Bright, indirect light; tolerates some light shade but growth slows in low light.
- Water: Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged; allow the top layer to dry slightly before watering again.
- Humidity: Prefers humidity above 60% for optimal growth.
- Media: Use a rich, free-draining aroid mix with organic matter, perlite, and bark.
- Fertiliser: Feed every 4-6 weeks during active growth with a diluted balanced fertiliser.
- Temperature: Maintain between 18-27 °C; avoid prolonged exposure below 15 °C.
- Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years, positioning the rhizome to allow space for forward growth.
