Philodendron hederaceum 'Brasil' - The Heartleaf Philodendron
check_circle In Stock
Philodendron hederaceum 'Brasil' is a variegated cultivar of Philodendron hederaceum, a widely distributed species native to Central and South America, particularly found in moist tropical forests. This selection features irregular patterns of lime to yellow variegation on otherwise green leaves and maintains the vining growth habit characteristic of the species. It was named 'Brasil' in reference to the yellow and green reminiscent of the Brazilian flag, though it is a horticultural cultivar rather than a naturally occurring variant.
Distinctive features:
- Heart-shaped leaves with central lime-yellow variegation and green margins
- Occasional sectors of cream or light green, sometimes with no symmetry
- Trailing or climbing stems with prominent aerial roots at nodes
- Leaf blades generally 8–12 cm long; thinner than many self-heading types
- Stems may exhibit reddish or pinkish tones in younger growth
Care Tips:
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light; lower light reduces variegation
- Water: Water when the top few centimetres of soil are dry
- Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity; tolerates average indoor levels
- Media: Use a well-draining mix containing peat or coir, perlite, and orchid bark
- Temperature: Ideal range is 18–27°C; avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 12°C
- Fertiliser: Feed monthly in the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser
- Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years, or when roots outgrow the container
Additional Notes:
- Toxic if ingested due to insoluble calcium oxalates
