Philodendron 'Ring of Fire' is a spectacular hybrid, thought to originate from a cross between Philodendron wendlandii and Philodendron tortum, although its exact lineage remains debated. Native to cultivated collections rather than the wild, this tropical aroid is celebrated for its jagged, multicoloured foliage that shifts dramatically as it matures. Its unpredictable variegation makes each specimen uniquely beautiful.
Distinctive Features
- Jagged foliage: The leaves exhibit deeply serrated edges, a rare trait among Philodendrons.
- Multicolour variegation: Shades of cream, orange, red and green appear in varying patterns across the same plant.
- Slow climber: Grows slowly and prefers to clamber if given support, making it ideal for moss poles or totems indoors.
Care Tips
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light; avoid harsh direct sun which can scorch the leaves.
- Water: Allow the top 3–5 cm of soil to dry between waterings; do not let sit in water.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity; benefits from occasional misting or a humidity tray.
- Media: Use a chunky, well-aerated mix with orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir.
- Temperature: Optimal range is 18–28 °C; protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 12 °C.
- Fertiliser: Feed monthly during active growth with a balanced, diluted liquid fertiliser.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when rootbound, ideally in spring or early summer.
Additional Notes
- Toxic to pets if ingested, like most aroids; keep out of reach of cats, dogs, and small children.
