Phlebodium aureum 'Blue Star' is a tropical fern native to the Caribbean, Central America, and parts of South America, where it grows epiphytically on tree branches in humid forests. In these environments, its rhizomes anchor to bark while absorbing moisture and nutrients from rainfall and decaying organic matter.
The plant is characterised by its soft, leathery fronds, which are an unusual blue-green colour with a slightly wavy margin. These fronds emerge from creeping, golden-scaled rhizomes that can spread over the surface of the growing medium or mounting material. Its foliage texture and colour make it distinct from most other common fern species.
In the wild, Phlebodium aureum reproduces via spores formed on the undersides of its fronds. In cultivation, it is typically propagated by division of the rhizomes. Its preference for indirect light and consistent moisture makes it a popular choice for shaded indoor spaces or sheltered outdoor positions in warm climates.
Care Tips:
Light: Bright, indirect light; tolerates lower light but avoid strong direct sun.
Water: Keep the medium evenly moist but not soggy; allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings.
Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity; mist during dry periods.
Media: Use a loose, free-draining mix rich in organic matter, such as an orchid bark and peat blend.
Fertiliser: Feed monthly in spring and summer with a diluted balanced fertiliser.
Temperature: Best grown between 15-27 °C; protect from frost.
Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years or when rhizomes outgrow the container.

Biosecurity States (WA, NT, TAS): These orders require mandatory biosecurity treatment (PHC) and follow a specific weekly schedule:
Cut-off: Orders must be placed by Thursday 11:59 PM AEST.
Dispatch Day: Orders are processed over the weekend and dispatched on Tuesday.
Plant Health Certification (PHC) Fees:
$20 fee applies to WA orders.
$10 fee applies to NT and TAS orders. This fee is per order (not per plant) and is included in your shipping costat checkout.
