Pinguicula cyclosecta – Violet Rosette with Sticky Traps (WA Prohibited)
Pinguicula cyclosecta – Violet Rosette with Sticky Traps
Pinguicula cyclosecta is a mesmerising carnivorous species endemic to the limestone hills of Nuevo León, Mexico. Known for its luminous purple-toned foliage, this butterwort captures unsuspecting insects on its glistening leaves. It exhibits a seasonal dimorphism, adapting beautifully to drier winter conditions by transitioning into a succulent-like form.
Distinctive Features
- Rosette Form: Compact and symmetrical rosette, often rich purple under high light conditions.
- Sticky Carnivorous Leaves: Broad leaves covered in mucilaginous glands to trap and digest prey.
- Seasonal Growth Shift: Shifts between carnivorous and succulent forms depending on season and moisture availability.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright indirect light to partial sun; tolerates strong light which enhances colouration.
- Water: Keep soil moist in summer using distilled or rainwater; allow to dry slightly in winter.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate humidity; thrives in well-ventilated environments.
- Media: Use a porous mix such as 1:1 perlite and peat or a Mexican butterwort mix with added limestone chips.
- Temperature: Optimal temperatures range between 15–27°C; avoid frost exposure.
- Fertiliser: Apply very dilute orchid or carnivorous plant fertiliser once a month in active growth phase.
- Repotting: Repot annually in spring to refresh media and stimulate healthy growth.
Additional Notes
- Not toxic to pets, making it a safer choice for indoor plant collectors.
- Produces delicate violet flowers on tall scapes in spring and early summer.
- Can be propagated from leaf pullings during its carnivorous phase or division of offshoots.
With its jewel-toned leaves and dual seasonal personalities, Pinguicula cyclosecta is a rewarding and unusual addition to any carnivorous plant collection. Ideal for terrariums, windowsills, or even as an eye-catching specimen in a mixed succulent display, this adaptable species offers visual intrigue and passive pest control in one compact rosette.
