check_circle In Stock
Platycerium bifurcatum 'Netherlands' is a distinctive cultivar of the staghorn fern, celebrated for its compact growth habit and adaptability. Native to Java, New Guinea, New South Wales, Queensland, and Lord Howe Island, this epiphytic fern thrives in various environments, making it a popular choice for indoor plant enthusiasts.
Distinctive Features
- Compact Growth Habit: This cultivar is known for its smaller size, making it ideal for limited spaces.
-
Dimorphic Fronds: Exhibits two types of fronds:
- Basal (Shield) Fronds: Round to heart-shaped, these fronds protect the root structure and help in nutrient absorption. They start green and turn brown as they age, forming a protective layer.
- Fertile (Antler) Fronds: Erect and arching, these grey-green fronds are forked, resembling antlers, and can grow up to 90 cm long.
- Epiphytic Nature: Naturally grows on trees, deriving nutrients from the air and rain, which allows for versatile mounting options in cultivation.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the fronds, while too little light may hinder growth.
- Water: Requires regular watering to keep the medium moist but not waterlogged. Soak the root ball thoroughly and allow it to dry slightly between waterings.
- Humidity: Thrives in high humidity environments. Regular misting or placement in humid areas like bathrooms can be beneficial.
- Media: As an epiphyte, it grows best mounted on wood or in a well-draining medium like sphagnum moss.
- Temperature: Favors temperatures between 10°C to 37°C. Protect from frost and avoid exposure to temperatures below 5°C.
- Fertiliser: Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced, diluted liquid fertiliser to promote healthy growth.
- Repotting: Rarely requires repotting due to its epiphytic nature. If mounted, ensure the mounting medium remains secure and replace it if it deteriorates.
