Pleiospilos nelii 'Royal Flush' - Living Stone
check_circle In Stock
Pleiospilos nelii 'Royal Flush' is a cultivated form of the South African species Pleiospilos nelii, naturally occurring in the semi-arid regions of the Northern Cape. In the wild, the species grows in quartzite or sandstone grit, often partially buried, where its stone-like appearance camouflages it from herbivores. The cultivar 'Royal Flush' is distinguished by its rich purple to burgundy leaf colouration.
This succulent produces a pair of thick, opposite leaves that are smooth, triangular in cross-section, and slightly fissured at the top. New leaves emerge from the central fissure, replacing the previous pair annually. The plant remains small, typically around 5–8 cm in diameter, and its compact growth helps reduce water loss in its arid habitat.
In late summer to autumn, mature plants produce large, daisy-like flowers from the central fissure. The blooms are usually bright pink with a yellow centre, opening in the afternoon and closing by evening. Each flower may last several days and is pollinated by insects in its native range.
Care Tips:
- Light: Full sun to bright light; essential for maintaining compact growth and leaf colour.
- Water: Water sparingly; allow soil to dry completely. Avoid watering during leaf replacement to prevent rot.
- Media: Use a very free-draining mineral mix with a high proportion of grit or coarse sand.
- Fertiliser: Apply a diluted, low-nitrogen fertiliser during the active growth period in spring and autumn.
- Temperature: Prefers warm, dry conditions; protect from frost and prolonged cold below 5 °C.
- Repotting: Rarely needed; repot only when clumps expand beyond the pot.
