Originating from the cool, cloud forests of Ecuador, Pleurothallis endotrachys is a delightful miniature orchid that captures the hearts of plant enthusiasts. Its compact size and striking, fuzzy orange flowers make it a wonderful addition to any orchid collection.
Distinctive Features
- Growth Habit: This epiphytic orchid, meaning it grows on trees, is a mini-miniature, staying relatively small, making it perfect for those with limited space. It typically grows on mossy branches in its natural habitat.
- Flowers: The most captivating feature of Pleurothallis endotrachys is its unique flowers. They are a vibrant orange colour with a fuzzy texture, adding a touch of whimsy to this charming orchid. The flowers emerge from the base of the leaves and are typically solitary.
- Fragrance: While some Pleurothallis species are known for their fragrance, Pleurothallis endotrachys has no discernible scent.
Care Tips
- Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can burn the leaves.
- Water: Water regularly, keeping the potting media moist but not soggy. Allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings.
- Humidity: Maintain high humidity levels, around 60-80%. You can achieve this by misting the plant regularly or using a humidifier.
- Temperature: This orchid prefers cool to intermediate temperatures, ideally between 15-24°C (59-75°F) during the day and 10-15°C (50-59°F) at night.
- Potting Media: Use a well-draining orchid potting mix, such as sphagnum moss or bark.
- Fertiliser: Fertilise weakly, every other week during the growing season (spring-summer) with a balanced orchid fertiliser.
- Air Circulation: Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases.
Additional Notes
- Pleurothallis endotrachys is a relatively easy orchid to care for, making it suitable for beginners.
- Its small size makes it ideal for growing on windowsills, under grow lights, or in terrariums.
- This orchid is a great conversation starter due to its unique and eye-catching flowers.
- With proper care, Pleurothallis endotrachys can bloom reliably for many years.
