Portulaca molokiniensis "Hawaiian Portulaca"
Molokiniensis is a rare Hawaiian plant considered endangered in its habitat; fortunately it is easy to grow in cultivation.
Thick fleshy leaf-clad stems grow to 20cm and produce numerous offsets from the base. 1.5cm yellow flowers appear in summer.
Position - full sun or partial shade. Great in gardens, hedging, fence lines, rockeries or pots. Indoors in well-lit positions otherwise they will grow thin and weak. In colder climates they should be grown in pots, protected and dry.
Watering - can be watered all year round and grow fastest in the warmer months. Plants will survive without water for very long periods.
Feeding - 25% of recommended dosage monthly in growing period. The less fertiliser the better the shape of the plant. Fertilisers high in nitrogen can produce larger plants with less colour.
Repotting - can be left to overgrow their pots or repotted at in the warmer months in almost any well drained potting mix.
