Rhaphidophora cryptantha 'Shingle Plant'
release_alert Low Stock - 1 available
Rhaphidophora cryptantha, commonly known as the Shingle Plant, is a climbing aroid valued for its distinctive foliage. The species is native to tropical forest regions, with records from Papua New Guinea, where it grows tightly against tree trunks or large rocks. Juvenile leaves remain closely appressed to the climbing surface in a layered arrangement, displaying dark green blades marked with pronounced silver-grey veining. This shingling growth habit is maintained throughout the plant’s life.
The leaves are broadly ovate with a cordate base, typically reaching 6–10 cm in length in cultivation, and are attached to slender stems that produce clasping roots for support. In its natural environment, this growth style enables the plant to take advantage of shaded, humid conditions along vertical surfaces. The orientation of the foliage ascends along the support, a characteristic that distinguishes it from some similar species.
Flowering in cultivation is uncommon, but the plant can produce a small, yellowish spathe surrounding a pale spadix, partially hidden behind the leaves. Its appeal lies primarily in the contrasting venation and the neat, architectural form created when given a suitable climbing surface such as a moss pole, wooden board, or tree fern totem.
Care Tips:
- Light: Bright, indirect light or dappled shade; avoid strong direct sun to prevent leaf scorch.
- Water: Keep the medium evenly moist, allowing the top layer to dry slightly between waterings.
- Humidity: Thrives in high humidity; provide regular misting or use a humidifier.
- Media: Use a well-draining, rich aroid mix with bark, perlite, and organic matter.
- Fertiliser: Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength monthly during active growth.
- Temperature: Best kept between 16 °C and 27 °C; protect from prolonged cold below 10 °C.
- Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years or when root growth becomes crowded, refreshing the medium and providing a sturdy support.
Additional Notes:
- Known to be toxic
