Rhaphidophora hayi is a climbing aroid native to the wet tropical forests of northern Queensland, Australia, and New Guinea. In its natural setting, it grows along tree trunks or rocky surfaces, with its juvenile leaves lying flat against the surface in an overlapping pattern, a growth style known as shingling. This appressed growth habit is retained throughout the plant’s life, giving it a uniform appearance.
The leaves are ovate, smooth, and a consistent green, measuring up to around 6 cm in width when grown under ideal conditions. Stems attach firmly to the climbing surface with clasping roots, allowing the plant to ascend vertically in search of better light. In the wild, this climbing habit enables it to take advantage of the humid, sheltered microclimate close to its support.
Flowering is uncommon in cultivation, but in its native environment the plant produces a small inflorescence typical of the Araceae family. Even without flowers, Rhaphidophora hayi is primarily grown for its tidy, layered foliage and the ability to create a living green panel when given a suitable support.
Care Tips:
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best; too much direct sun can scorch the leaves.
- Water: Keep the growing mix evenly moist, allowing the top layer to dry slightly between waterings.
- Humidity: Prefers high humidity; mist regularly or use a humidifier in drier conditions.
- Media: Use a rich, well-draining mix such as an aroid blend with bark, perlite, and organic matter.
- Fertiliser: Apply a diluted balanced fertiliser monthly during active growth in spring and summer.
- Temperature: Maintain between 13 °C and 27 °C; avoid prolonged exposure to cold.
- Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years to refresh the medium and provide space for root growth.
Additional Notes:
- Known to be toxic
