Rhipsalis baccifera subsp. delphinensis, commonly referred to as the Mistletoe Cactus, is a subspecies of the widespread Rhipsalis baccifera. It is native to Madagascar, where it inhabits warm, humid, and shaded forest habitats, typically growing on tree branches in the canopy. Its environment provides filtered sunlight, consistent atmospheric moisture, and good air movement.
The stems are long, slender, and cylindrical, branching from the tips to produce extensive, trailing growth. They are smooth, green, and flexible, allowing the plant to drape naturally over its host. This subspecies can produce stems that form dense curtains over time in favourable conditions.
Small, white flowers emerge along the stems, often in the warmer months, and are followed by rounded, whitish to translucent berries. These fruits are dispersed by birds, aiding in the plant’s spread throughout the forest canopy.
Care Tips:
- Light: Provide bright, indirect light; avoid prolonged direct sun which can scorch stems.
- Water: Keep evenly moist during active growth, allowing the surface of the media to dry slightly before rewatering; reduce watering in winter.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity; mist occasionally in dry indoor conditions.
- Media: Use a free-draining mix with fine orchid bark, peat or coir, and perlite.
- Temperature: Maintain between 15–27°C; avoid frost exposure.
- Fertiliser: Apply a diluted, balanced fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during the growing season.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when root-bound, ideally in spring.
