Sarcostemma subterranea
Sarcostemma subterranea 66mm potted
A relative of the Hoyas and Stapeliads, subterranea is an oddity with thin long cylindrical leaves that form clusters of 1cm hoya-like flowers in the warmer months, new growths will continue to appear from underground.
Position - full sun to partial shade in covered areas to control watering. Suitable for gardens in well-drained exposed positions in moderate climates.
Watering - should be watered well but should dry out soon after watering; Plants will survive without water for long periods and require periods of dryness over winter months to encourage flowering.
Feeding - 25% of recommended dosage monthly in growing period. The less fertiliser, the better the shape of the plant. Fertilisers high in nitrogen can produce larger plants with less colour.
Repotting - can be left to overgrow their pots or repotted in the warmer months in a well-drained potting mix.
