Pseudorhipsalis ramulosa (syn. Rhipsalis ramulosa) - Red Mistletoe Cactus
Pseudorhipsalis ramulosa (syn. Rhipsalis ramulosa), commonly known as the Red Mistletoe Cactus, is a colourful epiphytic cactus native to the rainforests of Central and South America. This easy-to-grow succulent is admired for its flattened, reddish stems and delicate white flowers. With its unique appearance and adaptability, Pseudorhipsalis ramulosa is a delightful addition to any plant collection.
Distinctive Features
- Flattened, Reddish Stems: The most distinctive feature of this cactus is its flattened stems, which can grow up to 70cm (28in) long. These stems are typically a vibrant reddish-green or even deep red, especially when grown in bright light, and have a smooth texture. The edges of the stems are often slightly wavy, adding to their visual interest.
- Delicate White Flowers: In spring and summer, Pseudorhipsalis ramulosa produces small, delicate white flowers along the edges of its stems. These blooms, though not particularly large, add a touch of elegance to this unusual cactus.
- Epiphytic Growth Habit: As an epiphyte, Pseudorhipsalis ramulosa naturally grows on trees in its native habitat. This means it prefers a well-draining potting mix and benefits from good air circulation around its roots.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best for Pseudorhipsalis ramulosa. While it can tolerate some shade, it will produce more vibrant colours and flowers in brighter conditions. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the stems.
- Water: Allow the potting mix to dry out slightly between waterings. During the growing season (spring and summer), water moderately, and reduce watering in autumn and winter when the plant is dormant.
- Humidity: This cactus prefers slightly higher humidity than desert cacti. Misting occasionally or placing the pot on a tray of pebbles and water can help create a more humid environment.
- Temperature: Pseudorhipsalis ramulosa thrives in warm temperatures between 18-24°C (64-75°F) during the growing season. In winter, it can tolerate cooler temperatures down to 10°C (50°F).
- Fertiliser: Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength once a month during the growing season to support healthy growth and flowering.
- Potting: Use a well-draining epiphytic cactus potting mix. Repot every 2-3 years in spring to replenish nutrients and accommodate its growth.
- Propagation: This cactus can be easily propagated from stem cuttings. Take cuttings in spring or summer, allow them to callus over for a few days, and then plant them in a well-draining potting mix.
Additional Notes
- Pseudorhipsalis ramulosa is a relatively fast-growing cactus and can quickly fill its container, making it a rewarding plant to watch develop.
- This cactus is not toxic to pets, but it's best to keep it out of reach of curious paws and mouths.
- With its unique appearance and easy care, Pseudorhipsalis ramulosa is a delightful addition to any plant collection, bringing a touch of the rainforest to your home.
