Kimnachia ramulosa (syn. Pseudorhipsalis) - Mistletoe Cactus
check_circle In Stock
Kimnachia ramulosa, formerly known under Disocactus, is a distinctive cactus species distributed across Central America and northern South America, including Mexico, Belize, and Venezuela. It inhabits tropical forests, where it grows as a climber in trees or occasionally on rocky ledges, experiencing high humidity, filtered light, and seasonal rainfall.
The plant produces long, flattened stems that are green when young but mature to reddish or purplish tones under higher light. These stems are irregularly branched, often twisting or cascading, and can reach well over a metre in length. The areoles along the stem margins bear small bristles rather than strong spines, reflecting its adaptation to shaded, humid forest conditions rather than arid habitats.
Flowering occurs in summer, with nocturnal, funnel-shaped blooms that are pale cream to yellowish in colour, opening for a single night. These are followed by small, red to purple fruits containing numerous seeds, which are dispersed by birds and other forest animals. Its unusual growth form and trailing habit make it popular as a hanging or mounted specimen in cultivation.
Care Tips:
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light with some morning or late afternoon sun; strong midday sun can scorch stems.
- Water: Water generously during the growing season, keeping the soil lightly moist but never waterlogged. Reduce watering in cooler months.
- Humidity: Benefits from moderate to high humidity, reflecting its forest origins.
- Media: Use an airy, organic-rich cactus or epiphytic mix with added bark, perlite, or pumice for drainage.
- Fertiliser: Apply a diluted cactus or orchid fertiliser every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer growth.
- Temperature: Ideal range is 16–28 °C. Protect from frost and prolonged exposure below 8 °C.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years, trimming back long stems if needed to manage growth.
