Rhipsalis goebeliana, commonly referred to as the Mistletoe Cactus, is a trailing cactus native to the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil. It grows in warm, humid, and shaded environments, most often attached to tree branches where it benefits from the diffused light and constant moisture of the canopy.
The stems are cylindrical to slightly flattened, green, and smooth, branching from the tips to form long, pendant growth. Segments can vary in length, and the plant’s flexible stems allow it to drape naturally over the surfaces it grows upon. Areoles are small and spaced along the stems, producing new growth and flowers.
Small, white flowers emerge along the stems, often in the warmer months, and are followed by spherical, whitish berries. These fruits are eaten by birds, aiding in the species’ dispersal throughout its forest habitat.
Care Tips:
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; protect from harsh direct sunlight to prevent stem damage.
- Water: Keep evenly moist during the growing season, allowing the top layer of media to dry slightly before rewatering; reduce watering in winter.
- Humidity: Benefits from moderate to high humidity; mist occasionally if grown indoors in dry conditions.
- Media: Use a free-draining mix with fine orchid bark, peat or coir, and perlite.
- Temperature: Maintain between 15–27°C; avoid frost exposure.
- Fertiliser: Apply a diluted, balanced fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during active growth.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when root-bound, ideally in spring.
