Rhipsalis micrantha - Mistletoe Cactus - Delicate and Easy-to-Grow Epiphyte
Rhipsalis micrantha - Mistletoe Cactus
Rhipsalis micrantha, also known as the Mistletoe Cactus, is a delicate and charming epiphytic cactus native to the rainforests of Central and South America. This easy-to-grow succulent is admired for its slender, branching stems and dainty white flowers. With its graceful appearance and adaptability, Rhipsalis micrantha is a delightful addition to any plant collection.
Distinctive Features
- Slender, Branching Stems: This cactus is characterized by its slender, cylindrical stems that can grow up to 60cm (24in) long. These stems are typically a vibrant green and have a smooth texture, creating a delicate, cascading effect.
- Dainty White Flowers: In spring and summer, Rhipsalis micrantha produces small, dainty white flowers along its stems. These blooms, though not particularly showy, add a touch of simple elegance to this charming cactus.
- Epiphytic Growth Habit: As an epiphyte, Rhipsalis micrantha naturally grows on trees in its native habitat. This means it prefers a well-draining potting mix and benefits from good air circulation around its roots.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best for Rhipsalis micrantha. While it can tolerate some shade, it will produce more flowers in brighter conditions. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the stems.
- Water: Allow the potting mix to dry out slightly between waterings. During the growing season (spring and summer), water moderately, and reduce watering in autumn and winter when the plant is dormant.
- Humidity: This cactus prefers slightly higher humidity than desert cacti. Misting occasionally or placing the pot on a tray of pebbles and water can help create a more humid environment.
- Temperature: Rhipsalis micrantha thrives in warm temperatures between 18-24°C (64-75°F) during the growing season. In winter, it can tolerate cooler temperatures down to 10°C (50°F).
- Fertiliser: Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength once a month during the growing season to support healthy growth and flowering.
- Potting: Use a well-draining epiphytic cactus potting mix. Repot every 2-3 years in spring to replenish nutrients and accommodate its growth.
- Propagation: This cactus can be easily propagated from stem cuttings. Take cuttings in spring or summer, allow them to callus over for a few days, and then plant them in a well-draining potting mix.
Additional Notes
- Rhipsalis micrantha is a relatively fast-growing cactus and can quickly fill its container, making it a rewarding plant to watch develop.
- This cactus is not toxic to pets, but it's best to keep it out of reach of curious paws and mouths.
- With its delicate appearance and easy care, Rhipsalis micrantha is a delightful addition to any plant collection, bringing a touch of the rainforest to your home.
