Rhipsalis mesembryanthemoides - Mistletoe Cactus
check_circle In Stock
Rhipsalis mesembryanthemoides, commonly called the Mistletoe Cactus, is a distinctive Brazilian species found in the Atlantic Forest, where it grows on trees in humid, shaded environments. Its native habitat offers consistently warm temperatures, filtered light, and high atmospheric moisture.
The stems are slender, cylindrical, and densely covered with short, bristly spines emerging from small areoles, giving them a textured appearance. Branching occurs freely, and the plant forms compact, bushy growth that can eventually trail over the sides of its container. The unusual texture of the stems is a key identifying feature of this species.
Small, white flowers appear at the stem tips, often in winter to early spring. These are followed by spherical, translucent white berries containing seeds that are distributed by birds within the forest canopy.
Care Tips:
- Light: Provide bright, indirect light; protect from intense midday sun which may damage stems.
- Water: Keep the potting mix evenly moist during active growth, allowing the surface to dry slightly before rewatering; reduce watering in winter.
- Humidity: Thrives in moderate to high humidity; mist occasionally in dry conditions.
- Media: Use a free-draining mix containing fine orchid bark, peat or coir, and perlite.
- Temperature: Maintain between 15–27°C; protect from frost.
- Fertiliser: Apply a diluted, balanced fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during the growing season.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when root-bound, ideally in spring.
