Rhipsalis micrantha - Mistletoe Cactus
check_circle In Stock
Rhipsalis micrantha, commonly referred to as the Mistletoe Cactus, is a pendulous cactus species native to the Atlantic Forest of eastern Brazil. It is typically found growing on tree branches or occasionally on mossy rock surfaces in humid, shaded environments where it benefits from filtered light and consistent atmospheric moisture.
The stems are slender, cylindrical to slightly angled, and green, with small areoles spaced along their length. Branching occurs irregularly from the tips, producing long, trailing growth that can form dense curtains over time. The name ‘micrantha’ refers to its small-flowered nature compared with some related species.
Flowers are small, white to pale cream, and appear along the stems, often during the warmer months. These are followed by rounded, whitish to translucent berries that are dispersed by birds, helping the plant spread through the forest canopy.
Care Tips:
- Light: Provide bright, indirect light; avoid intense midday sun which may damage stems.
- Water: Keep evenly moist during active growth, allowing the surface to dry slightly before rewatering; reduce watering in winter.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity; mist occasionally if indoor air is dry.
- Media: Use a free-draining mix containing fine orchid bark, peat or coir, and perlite.
- Temperature: Maintain between 15–27°C; protect from frost.
- Fertiliser: Feed every 4–6 weeks during the growing season with a diluted, balanced fertiliser.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when root-bound, preferably in spring.
