Rhipsalis baccifera ssp. delphinensis - Mistletoe Cactus - Delicate Trailing Beauty
Rhipsalis baccifera ssp. delphinensis - Mistletoe Cactus
Rhipsalis baccifera ssp. delphinensis, commonly known as the Mistletoe Cactus, is a charming epiphytic cactus native to the rainforests of Madagascar. This easy-to-grow succulent is admired for its slender, trailing stems and delicate white flowers, followed by translucent white berries. With its graceful appearance and adaptability, Rhipsalis baccifera ssp. delphinensis is a delightful plant for both novice and experienced plant enthusiasts.
Distinctive Features
- Slender, Trailing Stems: This cactus is characterized by its slender, cylindrical stems that can grow up to 50cm (20in) long. These stems are typically a vibrant green and have a smooth texture, creating a delicate, cascading effect.
- Delicate White Flowers: In spring and summer, Rhipsalis baccifera ssp. delphinensis produces small, delicate white flowers along its stems. These blooms, though not particularly showy, add a touch of simple elegance to this charming cactus.
- Translucent White Berries: Following the flowers, this cactus develops small, translucent white berries, resembling mistletoe berries, which add to its visual appeal.
- Epiphytic Growth Habit: As an epiphyte, Rhipsalis baccifera ssp. delphinensis naturally grows on trees in its native habitat. This means it prefers a well-draining potting mix and benefits from good air circulation around its roots.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best for Rhipsalis baccifera ssp. delphinensis. While it can tolerate some shade, it will produce more flowers in brighter conditions. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the stems.
- Water: Allow the potting mix to dry out slightly between waterings. During the growing season (spring and summer), water moderately, and reduce watering in autumn and winter when the plant is dormant.
- Humidity: This cactus prefers slightly higher humidity than desert cacti. Misting occasionally or placing the pot on a tray of pebbles and water can help create a more humid environment.
- Temperature: Rhipsalis baccifera ssp. delphinensis thrives in warm temperatures between 18-24°C (64-75°F) during the growing season. In winter, it can tolerate cooler temperatures down to 10°C (50°F).
- Fertiliser: Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength once a month during the growing season to support healthy growth and flowering.
- Potting: Use a well-draining epiphytic cactus potting mix. Repot every 2-3 years in spring to replenish nutrients and accommodate its growth.
- Propagation: This cactus can be easily propagated from stem cuttings. Take cuttings in spring or summer, allow them to callus over for a few days, and then plant them in a well-draining potting mix.
Additional Notes
- Rhipsalis baccifera ssp. delphinensis is a relatively fast-growing cactus and can quickly fill its container, making it a rewarding plant to watch develop.
- This cactus is not toxic to pets, but it's best to keep it out of reach of curious paws and mouths.
- With its delicate appearance and easy care, Rhipsalis baccifera ssp. delphinensis is a delightful addition to any plant collection, bringing a touch of the rainforest to your home.
