Rhipsalis elliptica (syn. Rhipsalis anguligar) - Mistletoe Cactus
Rhipsalis elliptica (syn. Rhipsalis anguligar), also known as the Mistletoe Cactus, is a captivating epiphytic cactus native to the rainforests of Brazil. This easy-to-grow succulent is admired for its distinctive angular, branching stems and delicate white flowers. With its unique appearance and adaptability, Rhipsalis elliptica is a rewarding plant for both novice and experienced plant enthusiasts.
Distinctive Features
- Angular, Branching Stems: The most striking feature of this cactus is its angular, branching stems, which can grow up to 1m (39in) long. These stems are typically a vibrant green and have a smooth, waxy texture. The angular shape of the stems gives this cactus a unique architectural quality.
- Delicate White Flowers: In spring and summer, Rhipsalis elliptica produces small, delicate white flowers along its stems. These blooms, though not particularly showy, add a touch of elegance to this unusual cactus and are followed by small, white berries.
- Epiphytic Growth Habit: As an epiphyte, Rhipsalis elliptica naturally grows on trees in its native habitat. This means it prefers a well-draining potting mix and benefits from good air circulation around its roots.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best for Rhipsalis elliptica. While it can tolerate some shade, it will produce more flowers in brighter conditions. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the stems.
- Water: Allow the potting mix to dry out slightly between waterings. During the growing season (spring and summer), water moderately, and reduce watering in autumn and winter when the plant is dormant.
- Humidity: This cactus prefers slightly higher humidity than desert cacti. Misting occasionally or placing the pot on a tray of pebbles and water can help create a more humid environment.
- Temperature: Rhipsalis elliptica thrives in warm temperatures between 18-24°C (64-75°F) during the growing season. In winter, it can tolerate cooler temperatures down to 10°C (50°F).
- Fertiliser: Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength once a month during the growing season to support healthy growth and flowering.
- Potting: Use a well-draining epiphytic cactus potting mix. Repot every 2-3 years in spring to replenish nutrients and accommodate its growth.
- Propagation: This cactus can be easily propagated from stem cuttings. Take cuttings in spring or summer, allow them to callus over for a few days, and then plant them in a well-draining potting mix.
Additional Notes
- Rhipsalis elliptica is a relatively fast-growing cactus and can quickly fill its container, making it a rewarding plant to watch develop.
- This cactus is not toxic to pets, but it's best to keep it out of reach of curious paws and mouths.
- With its unique appearance and easy care, Rhipsalis elliptica is a fascinating addition to any plant collection, bringing a touch of the rainforest to your home.
