Rhipsalis hoelleri - Mistletoe Cactus
check_circle In Stock
Rhipsalis hoelleri, known as the Mistletoe Cactus, is a rare Brazilian species occurring in the Atlantic Forest, where it inhabits warm, humid, and shaded environments. It is typically found growing on tree branches in the mid to upper canopy, benefiting from constant moisture and diffused sunlight.
The stems are slender, cylindrical, and smooth, branching irregularly to create trailing growth that can extend considerably with age. The segments are green, with small areoles spaced along their length, and remain flexible, allowing the plant to adapt to the contours of its host surface.
Flowers are small, white, and borne along the stems, followed by rounded, translucent berries. These fruits are consumed by birds, which assist in distributing the seeds throughout the forest canopy.
Care Tips:
- Light: Provide bright, indirect light; avoid direct midday sun to prevent stem scorching.
- Water: Maintain even moisture during the growing season, allowing the surface to dry slightly between waterings; reduce watering in winter.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity; occasional misting is beneficial in dry indoor air.
- Media: Use a free-draining mix incorporating fine orchid bark, peat or coir, and perlite.
- Temperature: Best maintained between 15–27°C; protect from frost.
- Fertiliser: Apply a diluted, balanced fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during active growth.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound, ideally in spring.
