Rhipsalis teres f. prismatica - Mistletoe Cactus
check_circle In Stock
Rhipsalis teres f. prismatica is a form of the species Rhipsalis teres in the Cactaceae family, native to the Atlantic Forest regions of Brazil. In the wild, it grows as an epiphyte in warm, humid forests, attaching itself to tree branches where it receives bright, filtered light and benefits from consistent moisture. This environment offers high humidity, free-draining organic debris as a rooting medium, and regular rainfall throughout much of the year.
The plant produces slender, green, three-angled stems that are smooth and jointed, forming pendant or arching growth. Small, white to pale pink flowers appear along the stems, often in spring to summer, followed by translucent to white berry-like fruits. Its segmented, angular stems give it a distinct appearance compared to the rounder forms of Rhipsalis teres.
In cultivation, it is suited to hanging baskets or mounted displays where its cascading habit can be appreciated. Consistent moisture, high humidity, and protection from harsh direct sun are key to maintaining healthy growth.
Care Tips:
- Light: Prefers bright, filtered light; avoid prolonged direct midday sun which can cause stem scorch.
- Water: Keep the mix lightly moist during active growth; reduce watering slightly in winter while preventing complete dryness.
- Humidity: Requires moderate to high humidity; occasional misting can help in drier environments.
- Media: Use a well-draining epiphytic mix containing orchid bark, peat, and perlite to mimic natural growing conditions.
- Fertiliser: Feed monthly during the growing season with a diluted, balanced fertiliser.
- Temperature: Ideal range is 16–28°C; protect from temperatures below 10°C.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years in spring, refreshing the mix and trimming any damaged stems.
- Propagation: Easily propagated from stem cuttings; allow cut ends to callus before planting in a lightly moist medium.
