Fragrant Orange Blooms on Cascading Spikes
Rhynchostylis gigantea 'Orange' is native to Southeast Asia and favoured for its dense, pendant inflorescences bearing masses of vibrant orange flowers. In nature, it grows as an epiphyte in warm, humid forests and appreciates strong light and excellent airflow when cultivated.
Distinctive Features
- Inflorescence: Long, drooping racemes carry numerous 2–3 cm blooms in early to mid-summer, often with a pleasant citrus-like fragrance.
- Flower Colour: Shades range from apricot to tangerine, sometimes with a pink blush toward the centres.
- Growth Habit: Slow-growing monopodial orchid with thick, leathery leaves and robust aerial roots.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright, filtered sunlight; tolerates some morning direct sun but avoid hot midday exposure.
- Water: Water thoroughly in active growth; reduce in cooler months while maintaining humidity.
- Humidity: Thrives in high humidity (60–80%); benefits from regular misting or use of a humidity tray.
- Media: Mount on bark or grow in a coarse orchid mix allowing rapid drainage and root aeration.
- Temperature: Ideal range is 18–30°C; protect from chills below 15°C.
- Fertiliser: Feed fortnightly in warm months with a balanced orchid fertiliser; reduce frequency in winter.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when media breaks down, preferably in spring.
Additional Notes
- Flowering is often encouraged by a slight temperature drop and increased light in the lead-up to summer.
- Plants are sensitive to root disturbance—handle with care during repotting.
