The Variegated Mother of Thousands: A Colourful and Prolific Groundcover
Saxifraga stolonifera 'Strawberry Begonia Variegata' is a captivating groundcover plant that will add a touch of vibrant colour and intrigue to your indoor or outdoor space. This unique cultivar is prized for its colourful variegated foliage and prolific nature, earning it the common name "Mother of Thousands."
Distinctive Features
- Leaves: Rounded, hairy leaves with a striking variegated pattern. The leaves typically feature a deep green centre with silver veining, surrounded by a band of creamy white and a blush of pink. The variegation can vary from leaf to leaf, adding to the visual interest. The underside of the leaves is often a deep red colour, adding to their appeal.
- Plantlets: Produces numerous plantlets along the edges of its leaves. These plantlets can be easily removed and propagated to create new plants, hence the common name "Mother of Thousands."
- Flowers: Produces tall, airy flower stalks with delicate white or pink blooms. While the flowers are not the main attraction, they add a touch of elegance to this already captivating plant.
- Growth Habit: This Saxifraga has a spreading, groundcover growth habit. It typically reaches a height of 15-20cm (6-8 inches) and spreads readily through its prolific plantlets.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate leaves.
- Water: Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it's important to be cautious.
- Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix that is rich in organic matter.
- Temperature: Maintain cool to moderate temperatures between 10-24°C (50-75°F). Avoid exposing this plant to extreme heat or frost.
- Fertiliser: Use a diluted liquid fertiliser once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Propagation: This Saxifraga can be easily propagated through its plantlets. Simply remove a plantlet from the leaf margin and place it on well-draining soil. Roots will typically form within a few weeks.
