Saxifraga stolonifera 'Yakushima' (WA Prohibited)
check_circle In Stock
Saxifraga stolonifera 'Yakushima' is a cultivated variety of stolonifera in the Saxifragaceae family. The species is native to China, Korea, and Japan, where it grows in shaded, moist environments such as forest floors, rocky crevices, and damp cliffs. This variety is associated with Yakushima, a Japanese island known for its humid, temperate climate and rich plant diversity. It is a stolon-producing perennial, forming low mats of foliage connected by slender runners that root to establish new plants.
The leaves are rounded to heart-shaped with scalloped edges, marked by green upper surfaces often marbled with lighter veining and reddish undersides. Fine hairs cover the leaf surface, giving a soft texture. In late spring to early summer, delicate flowering stems rise above the foliage, bearing airy clusters of small white flowers with two long lower petals and shorter upper ones, creating an intricate, star-like appearance. These blooms are pollinated by small insects.
In cultivation, this variety thrives in cool, moist, and shaded conditions, making it suitable for shaded borders, rock gardens, container culture, or as a groundcover in damp, sheltered spots. The plant spreads steadily via stolons, and its foliage remains attractive throughout the growing season.
Care Tips:
- Light: Prefers partial to full shade; protect from direct midday sun, which can scorch the leaves.
- Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged; avoid allowing the plant to dry out completely.
- Humidity: Appreciates higher humidity levels; regular misting can help in dry climates.
- Media: Grow in a fertile, humus-rich, well-draining soil with good moisture retention.
- Fertiliser: Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced, diluted fertiliser.
- Temperature: Prefers cool to mild conditions; protect from severe frost in colder climates.
- Repotting: Repot or divide clumps every 2–3 years in spring to maintain vigour.
- Propagation: Easily propagated via stolons; detach and plant rooted offsets in suitable conditions.
