Selaginella martensii variegata 'Jori' is a variegated cultivar of martensii, a species in the Selaginellaceae family. The species is native to Central America, where it inhabits humid, shaded forest environments. It grows as a creeping, mat-forming plant, rooting along its stems and producing upright, fern-like shoots. In cultivation, this variety is recognised for its variegated foliage, displaying a mix of green and creamy-white colouring along the leaf segments.
The stems are slender and covered in small, scale-like leaves arranged in a flattened, fern-like pattern. Growth is dense and spreading, with upright tips giving a slightly tufted appearance. The variegation pattern can be more pronounced in brighter, indirect light. This plant does not produce flowers, as Selaginella reproduces via spores rather than seeds, and it maintains a lush, evergreen appearance under the right conditions.
In cultivation, 'Jori' prefers consistent warmth, high humidity, and evenly moist conditions. It is well suited to terrariums, shaded greenhouse benches, or indoor displays in areas protected from cold and direct sun. Prolonged dryness or low humidity can cause browning of the foliage tips.
Care Tips:
- Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal; avoid direct sun, which can scorch foliage and diminish variegation.
- Water: Keep the substrate consistently moist but not waterlogged; do not allow it to dry out completely.
- Humidity: Requires high humidity; suitable for terrariums or near a humidifier. Misting can help in dry environments.
- Media: Use a light, moisture-retentive, well-draining mix rich in organic matter.
- Fertiliser: Apply a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during active growth.
- Temperature: Prefers 18-24°C; protect from temperatures below 12°C.
- Repotting: Repot in spring if the plant outgrows its container or the substrate becomes compacted.
- Propagation: Propagate by stem division or cuttings, ensuring sections have healthy roots attached.
