Selaginella uncinata 'Peacock Moss'
The Iridescent Blue Clubmoss
Selaginella uncinata, commonly known as 'Peacock Moss', is a strikingly iridescent species of spikemoss, admired for its shimmering blue-green foliage. Native to humid subtropical regions, this low-growing, mat-forming plant thrives in terrariums, shaded gardens, and as an underplanting in tropical landscapes.
Distinctive Features:
- Delicate, feathery foliage that shifts between green and metallic blue, depending on light exposure.
- Spreading, creeping growth habit, forming a lush carpet of greenery.
- Prefers warm, humid conditions, making it ideal for terrariums and shaded indoor spaces.
- Non-flowering but produces spores, characteristic of the Selaginella genus.
- Highly sensitive to drying out, requiring consistently moist conditions.
Care Tips:
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light to deep shade. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate foliage.
- Water: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. It is intolerant of drying out.
- Humidity: Requires high humidity (above 60%) to prevent leaf desiccation. Ideal for terrariums or bathrooms.
- Media: Prefers well-draining, rich organic soil with good moisture retention, such as a peat-based mix.
- Temperature: Grows best in warm conditions between 18°C and 26°C, avoiding cold drafts and sudden temperature drops.
- Fertiliser: Apply a diluted liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during the growing season for optimal health.
- Repotting: Rarely needs repotting; refresh the soil every couple of years if grown in containers.
Additional Notes:
- Excellent for closed terrariums, paludariums, and shaded greenhouse setups.
- Can be propagated through division, ensuring new growth quickly establishes.
- Best paired with moisture-loving plants like ferns and bromeliads.
- Not frost-tolerant; protect from cold weather if grown outdoors.
- May revert to a greener shade in lower light conditions.
Selaginella uncinata 'Peacock Moss' is a mesmerising plant, well-suited to those who appreciate unique foliage and high-humidity environments. Whether grown in a terrarium or as ground cover in a tropical garden, its iridescent hues bring an enchanting, almost otherworldly quality to any plant collection.
