Sempervivum 'Centennial' is a cultivated member of what is commonly known as houseleeks, in the Crassulaceae family. It has been developed from species native to the mountainous regions of southern Europe, where they grow in rocky crevices and shallow, free-draining soils exposed to full sun. This origin gives the plant strong tolerance for drought, poor soils, and freezing temperatures.
The rosettes are well-formed and symmetrical, with fleshy, triangular leaves displaying a blend of green and red tones. The red pigmentation often intensifies during cooler seasons or under strong sunlight, creating a vivid contrast with the leaf bases. Offsets are produced freely, forming expanding mats over time. Like all Sempervivum, each rosette is monocarpic, flowering once before dying, with surrounding offsets ensuring the colony’s continuation.
Flowering generally occurs in summer when mature rosettes produce tall stems topped with clusters of star-shaped flowers. These blooms are typically pink to reddish and are attractive to a variety of pollinating insects. After flowering and seed set, the rosette dies back, leaving offsets to maintain growth and fill available space.
Care Tips:
- Light: Full sun promotes compact form and stronger colour development.
- Water: Water sparingly, ensuring the substrate dries completely between applications.
- Media: Use a gritty, sharply draining mix suitable for alpine and succulent species.
- Fertiliser: Occasional feeding with a diluted, low-nitrogen fertiliser during the active growing season.
- Temperature: Hardy to frost and prolonged freezing when kept dry.
- Repotting: Infrequent; divide offsets or refresh the substrate when clumps become crowded.
