Sempervivum 'Lime Light'
cancel Sold out
Sempervivum 'Lime Light' is a cultivated member of what is commonly known as houseleeks, in the Crassulaceae family. It has been bred from species native to the mountainous regions of southern Europe, where they grow in rocky outcrops and shallow, well-drained soils exposed to full sun. This background gives the plant excellent tolerance to drought, low nutrients, and winter cold.
The rosettes are compact and symmetrical, with fleshy, triangular leaves displaying bright lime-green tones that can shift slightly with seasonal changes. In cooler weather or under strong light, the leaf tips may develop a reddish tinge. Offsets are produced readily, forming spreading clumps over time. Like all Sempervivum, each rosette is monocarpic, flowering once before dying, with offsets ensuring the colony’s persistence.
Flowering generally occurs in summer when mature rosettes produce tall stems topped with clusters of star-shaped blooms. The flowers are typically pink to reddish in colour and attract various insect pollinators. After flowering and seed production, the parent rosette dies back, allowing offsets to fill the space and continue growth.
Care Tips:
- Light: Full sun is best for strong colour and compact form.
- Water: Water sparingly, ensuring the substrate dries completely between applications.
- Media: Use a gritty, free-draining mix suitable for alpine and succulent plants.
- Fertiliser: Light feeding with a diluted, low-nitrogen fertiliser during active growth if needed.
- Temperature: Hardy to frost and sub-zero temperatures when kept dry.
- Repotting: Minimal; divide and replant offsets or refresh the substrate when clumps become crowded.
