Sempervivum 'Lioness' is a cultivated member of what is commonly known as houseleeks, in the Crassulaceae family. It originates from breeding work using species native to the mountainous regions of southern Europe, where these plants occupy rocky slopes and shallow, fast-draining soils in full sun. This natural heritage imparts strong resilience to drought, poor soils, and sub-zero temperatures.
The rosettes are well-formed and symmetrical, with fleshy, triangular leaves that can display golden-green tones often flushed or tipped with red, particularly in cooler weather or strong light. Colouration shifts seasonally, adding to the plant’s ornamental appeal. Offsets are freely produced around the base, forming gradually expanding mats. Each rosette is monocarpic, flowering once before dying, with offsets sustaining the colony’s growth.
In summer, mature rosettes may produce tall stems topped with clusters of star-shaped flowers. These blooms are typically pink to reddish in colour and attract a variety of insect pollinators. Once flowering and seed formation are complete, the parent rosette dies back, leaving offsets to continue the plant’s spread.
Care Tips:
- Light: Full sun promotes compact growth and enhances seasonal leaf colour.
- Water: Water sparingly, allowing the substrate to dry completely between applications.
- Media: Gritty, sharply draining mix suitable for alpine and succulent plants.
- Fertiliser: Light feeding with a diluted, low-nitrogen fertiliser during active growth.
- Temperature: Hardy to frost and prolonged freezing when kept dry.
- Repotting: Rarely needed; divide offsets or refresh substrate when clusters become dense.
