Sempervivum 'Marland Beauty' is a cultivated member of what is commonly known as houseleeks, in the Crassulaceae family. It descends from species native to the mountainous regions of southern Europe, where plants thrive in rocky crevices and shallow, fast-draining soils under full sun. This ancestry provides the cultivar with strong tolerance to drought, temperature extremes, and nutrient-poor substrates.
The rosettes are compact and symmetrical, with fleshy, triangular leaves that display green bases blending into reddish tips, with colour intensity shifting through the seasons. Cooler weather and bright light often deepen the red tones. Offsets are freely produced, forming spreading mats over time. Like all Sempervivum, each rosette flowers once before dying, with offsets sustaining the colony.
Flowering usually occurs in summer when mature rosettes send up tall stems topped with clusters of star-shaped blooms. These flowers are typically pink to reddish and draw in various insect pollinators. After seed set, the flowering rosette dies back, leaving surrounding offsets to fill the space and continue growth.
Care Tips:
- Light: Full sun is best for strong colouration and compact growth.
- Water: Water sparingly, ensuring the substrate dries thoroughly between applications.
- Media: Gritty, free-draining mix suitable for alpine and succulent plants.
- Fertiliser: Occasional feeding with a diluted, low-nitrogen fertiliser during active growth.
- Temperature: Hardy to frost and sub-zero conditions when kept dry.
- Repotting: Infrequent; divide offsets or refresh the substrate when clumps become crowded.
