Sempervivum 'Purple Dazzler' is a cultivated member of the Crassulaceae family, bred from species native to the mountainous regions of southern Europe. In their natural habitat, these plants grow in shallow, well-drained soils over rock, enduring high light exposure, seasonal drought, and cold winters. This heritage makes the cultivar well adapted to similar conditions in cultivation.
The rosettes are neat and compact, formed of fleshy, triangular leaves that can develop vivid purple to reddish tones, especially in cooler weather or under strong sunlight. Seasonal colour variation is a key feature, with foliage often showing a mix of shades as conditions change. Offsets are produced freely, creating dense clusters over time. As with all Sempervivum, rosettes are monocarpic, flowering once before dying, a process balanced by continuous offset production.
Flowering generally occurs in summer, with mature rosettes producing a tall, leafy stem topped with clusters of star-shaped blooms. The flowers are usually pink to reddish in colour and are attractive to insect pollinators. Once flowering and seed production are complete, the parent rosette dies back, leaving offsets to maintain the colony.
Care Tips:
- Light: Full sun is essential for strong colour and compact form.
- Water: Water sparingly, ensuring the substrate dries completely between applications.
- Media: Use a gritty, sharply draining mix suitable for alpine and succulent plants.
- Fertiliser: Apply a diluted, low-nitrogen fertiliser during the active growing season if required.
- Temperature: Hardy to freezing temperatures when kept dry.
- Repotting: Rarely necessary; divide and replant offsets or refresh the substrate when clumps become crowded.
