Sempervivum 'Purple Velvet' is a cultivated variety within the Crassulaceae family, bred from species native to the mountainous regions of southern Europe. In their natural environment, these plants thrive in rocky crevices and shallow, well-drained soils, enduring full sun, fluctuating temperatures, and prolonged dry periods. This cultivar carries the same hardiness and adaptability into cultivation.
The rosettes are densely packed and composed of fleshy, pointed leaves with a fine surface texture. Seasonal changes in temperature and light intensity can bring out rich purple tones across the foliage, often deepening in cooler weather. Offsets are freely produced around the base, gradually forming spreading mats over time. Each rosette is monocarpic, flowering once before dying, but continual offset production ensures longevity.
During summer, mature rosettes may produce tall stems topped with clusters of star-shaped flowers. These are generally pink to reddish in hue and attract a range of pollinating insects. Once flowering and seed set are complete, the parent rosette dies, leaving space for the surrounding offsets to continue growth.
Care Tips:
- Light: Full sun to enhance colour and maintain compact growth.
- Water: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry completely between applications.
- Media: Gritty, free-draining mix suited to alpine and succulent plants.
- Fertiliser: Apply a low-nitrogen fertiliser at half strength during the growing season if required.
- Temperature: Hardy to freezing temperatures when kept dry.
- Repotting: Rarely necessary; divide offsets or refresh substrate as needed.
