Sempervivum tectorum 'Jade' is a cultivated form of the common houseleek, a hardy succulent species in the Crassulaceae family. The species is native to mountainous regions of southern and central Europe, where it occupies rocky outcrops, rooftops, and well-drained slopes. This cultivar forms tight rosettes of lime-green leaves with reddish tips, the colouring becoming more pronounced in bright light and cooler seasonal temperatures.
Growth occurs through the production of offsets on slender stolons, gradually forming dense clusters. Each rosette flowers only once, producing a tall flowering stem with clusters of star-shaped blooms before dying back, leaving the surrounding offsets to continue the colony's growth.
In cultivation, 'Jade' is suited to rock gardens, troughs, and well-drained containers. It tolerates frost and periods of drought, performing best in open, sunny positions with free-draining media. Light shade during extreme summer heat may help prevent leaf scorch in hotter climates.
Care Tips:
- Light — Position in full sun to enhance colour and maintain compact rosette form.
- Water — Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry fully between waterings.
- Media — Use a sandy or gritty, well-draining mix to prevent root rot.
- Fertiliser — Apply a diluted, low-nitrogen feed during the active growing season.
- Temperature — Cold hardy; tolerates frost and heat when grown in well-draining conditions.
- Repotting — Repot or divide clumps when rosettes become crowded, preferably in spring or early summer.
